What do I Understand by the Term “Negotiating skills”?

In the final analysis of this literature review, what then is the meaning of negotiation skills, given my understanding? Negotiation skills are those set of competencies needed for the successful handling of the negotiating process. For instance, communication skills help a marketer to exchange ideas in order to educate, clarify and inform the party of the issues relevant at arriving at a decision.

On the other hand, emotional intelligence is of paramount importance to the marketer at the negotiating table as this competency will help him or her to understand ones own and others feelings.

To summarize, negotiation skills are wide and varied. They include analytical skills, body language. Communication skills, decision making skills, emotional intelligence, understanding the big picture, leadership skills, listening skills, observing, eye contact, non verbal communication, questioning, diplomacy and diplomacy to name a few.

Negotiation skills include being well prepared, showing patience, maintaining integrity, avoiding the presumption of evil, controlling our emotions, understanding the role of time pressures, breaking down bigger issues into smaller ones, avoiding threats and manipulative tactics, focusing first on the problem rather than on the solution, seeking for interest-based decisions, and rejecting weak solutions.
